In the 90s, the FIA launched the “kitcar” category. The program featured two-wheel-drive cars with 2L engines. The aim was to make it a support category for national championships and the World Rally Championship. Many manufacturers are taking part in this project. Renault was one of them, developing the Clio Maxi. It was based on the famous Clio Williams. It benefits from a strong restyling: wide kit, spoiler, 17" wheels and a 2-liter in-line 4-cylinder engine developing 250 hp. The Clio Maxi made its competition debut at the 1995 Monte Carlo Rally, where Jean Ragnotti won his class. At the Tour de Corse 95, Ragnotti battled for victory with team-mate Bugalski. “Jeannot” finished second, giving the Clio Maxi a magnificent one-two finish on the legendary French rally!
