Since 1988, Toyota has been increasingly committed to the WRC. After a promising 1989 season, Toyota Team Europe aimed to step up its game for the 1990 campaign. As a result, the team recruited young Spanish prodigy Carlos Sainz for the new season, driving the Toyota Celica ST165. This partnership got off to a strong start with a podium finish at Monte Carlo, but also included a retirement in Portugal.
For the highly demanding 1990 Safari Rally, the team called upon experienced driver Björn Waldegård, the 1979 World Champion, to support Sainz. The Swede, who had already won the event three times, put all his expertise at Toyota’s service and once again claimed victory in what is often regarded as “the toughest rally in the world.”
Carlos Sainz finished fourth, scoring valuable points in his quest for his first World Championship title. The OT480 is a 1:18 scale rally pack. It consists of a Mercedes-Benz T1 truck model and the Toyota Celica ST165 Group A. These scale models are made of resin and feature no opening parts. The set is completed by a 1:18 scale metal flatbed trailer. This collection will delight rally fans and Toyota scale model collectors.
