Double world champion in the early 90s with Toyota, Carlos Sainz took on a new challenge in 1996 by joining Ford. After a brief stint at Subaru (94/95) "El Matador" hoped that this change of team would be beneficial to him. In San Remo, a legendary world championship event, Carlos Sainz had only one goal: victory. For this penultimate round of the 1996 season, the Spaniard wished to achieve a second victory at the wheel of the Cosworth Gr.A Escort following his win in Indonesia.
