Alongside the 4L, Clio and Twingo, the R5 is surely Renault's most popular car. The little city car arrived on the French market in 1972 and quickly became a best-seller. In fact, it has been the 6th best-selling car in France since 1947! The GTL version went on sale in 1976. In the context of the oil crisis, it relied on lower fuel consumption than the other versions. It was distinguished from other R5s by its plastic side panels, which seemed to extend the bumpers. It was an immediate success, and the GTL became the best-selling R5.
