In 1986, the world of rallying was vibrating with the sound of Group B. At the time, many manufacturers offered a car in the top category, but the 1986 World Rally Championship was animated by a Peugeot versus Lancia duel, the 205T16 EVO2 versus the Delta S4. In the Tour de Corse, the fifth round of the season, the duel was officiated by a Renault. François Chatriot performed brilliantly at the wheel of his Maxi 5 Turbo in the Renault Diac colours. The Maxi 5 finished second behind Bruno Saby's Peugeot 205 and ahead of Yves Loubet's stunning Alfa Romeo GTV6. However, the sporting aspect of the event was completely sidelined by the tragic death of Henri Toivonen (Lancia Delta S4) in Special Stage 18. The "flying Finn" was leading the rally and seemed to be on his way to his second victory of the season. Following this tragic accident, the two other Lancia drivers still in the race withdrew. The result was a win for the Peugeot of Saby and a fine second place for the R5 Maxi of Chatriot. The latter is still part of the history of the rally, even more so in its "DIAC" livery.
