Ce coupé a connu ses heures de gloire de 1974 à 1992 avec deux générations avant de disparaître brutalement du catalogue Volkswagen. En 2008 la marque allemande souhaite offrir une version coupé sportif à sa Golf V. C’est ainsi que le Scirocco revient sur le devant de la scène. La première phase est lancée en 2009 et connait un succès immédiat. En huit ans de commercialisation ce coupé dépasse le million d’unités vendues ce qui est supérieur aux ventes des deux premières générations cumulées. Pour concurrencer la Focus RS, Volkswagen lance début 2010 le Scirocco R, une version plus puissante et plus sportive développant 265 chevaux !
