It was in 1985 that this model replaced the Renault 5 Alpine Turbo in the great sporting tradition of the brand, as a response to fierce competition at the time in this particular domain. The "Cup" version, less well known by the public, was prepared by the maker and distributed solely to candidates for the Renault 5 GT Turbo Cup. Between 1985 and 1990 it allowed a number of "gentlemen drivers" to challenge one another during rallies all over France and Europe.
