After two victories with the Peugeot 205 T16 Grand Raid, derived from the 205 T16 Group B, Peugeot Sport wanted to change cars for the Dakar 1989. It was the 405 that is chosen as the basis for this new project. While the 405 T16 Grand Raid will borrow the mechanics of the 205, it would also resume the path of success of the eldest. For its first outing on the legendary Paris - Dakar, the Peugeot 405 T16 signed an impressive double! Ari Vatanen, World Rally Champion in 1981, clinched his second victory on the Dakar track. Jacky Ickx finished second and offered Peugeot its double bearing the Pioneer colours.
