In 1981, Jean-Luc Thérier was the reigning French gravel rally champion. He starts a mixed campaign for the '81 season, with a few rounds in the WRC. For these world events, he drove not a Toyota as in France, but a Porsche 911 SC for the Alméras Porsche Team. Unfortunately, mechanical problems were frequent, and his best result was 95th place in the Monte Carlo Rally. From the Rallye du Portugal onwards, Thérier retired from every outing with the 911 SC due to mechanical failure after fighting for a top5.
