Long before the Scirocco R that populates supermarket parking lots, Volkswagen launched this coupe in the 1970s. The first generation was designed by Ital Design and car-body builder Karmann. This period also saw the development of sports cars. The best example is the Golf GTI, which quickly became a benchmark. Volkswagen followed this trend with a GTI (Grand Touring Injection) version of its Scirocco. This model is equipped with the same 1600cm3 engine as the Golf GTI and Audi 80.
