The Olympus Rally was the second American round to be integrated into the WRC calendar. This happened three times between 1986 and 1988. The 1986 season was dominated by Peugeot and Lancia, while Audi and Ford officially withdrew to better prepare for the 1987 season. Nevertheless, it was an Audi sport quattro that took the podium on the Olympus Rally in 1986. It was driven by John Buffum, then 10-time national rally champion! So it's no surprise to find the best American rally driver on the podium of his home rally. In fact, he is the last US driver to win a WRC podium. And he's still the only one in WRC Drivers Championship!
