In 1973, the inaugural edition of the World Rally Championship was held, and already included some emblematic rallies. Among them, the Sanremo in Italy. Many manufacturers took part, but Alpine and Fiat were the most regular entrants throughout the 13 rounds of this very first season. The tenth round takes place at Rallye Sanremo in Italy. Three official Alpine cars were entered against an armada of Fiat 124s and Lancia Fulvias. At the finish, Jean-Luc Thérier wins ahead of Maurizio Verini's Fiat. Jean-Pierre Nicolas's A110 was also on the podium. Alpine became the benchmark brand in rallying, humiliating the Italian crews on home soil. The A110 1800's qualities were undeniable, and it was only logical that the Dieppe-based brand should take the title in the first World Rally Championship, less than two months after its resounding victory at Sanremo.
