At the start of the Nineties, every manufacturer was trying to put an end to the domination of the Lancias in the World Rally Championships. After placing second in two championships, Toyota took the opportunity at the launch of the fifth generation of Celicas to concoct a new weapon capable of taking down the undefeated Italians. With distinctly compact look and an esthetic directly inspired by bio design, it took the coupé market by storm. In competition, all bets were off when Sainz, Kankkunen and Auriol took the championships home between 1992 and 1994. It remains to this day the Toyota with the most wins in rally-driving.
