Back in the Nineties, Volvo sought to rejuvenate and revitalize its corporate image. In 1992, the 850 was commercialised, and its success was instantaneous. The following year, a station wagon version was marketed to complete the range. In 1994, Volvo launched, to everyone's surprise, its BTCC (British Touring Car Championship) station wagon, a daring gamble that was rewarded with decent laps in the qualifiers and a 5th place overall. This sporting commitment was the basis of the marketing for the launch of the Volvo 850 T5-R Estate, a sporty and top-of-the-range version of the 850 station wagon. As a limited series, the Volvo 850 T5-R met with some success back in the day, and has a strong fan base these days.
