After successful performances in Germany and in the ERC in a Ford Capri, Walter Röhrl was engaged by Irmscher Tuning to compete in the first ever World Rally Championship and the German Championship in 1973. The season started with the already unmissable Rallye Monte-Carlo. A tricky event that did not go down well with the great Walter and his very long Opel Commodore GS/E. The German crew abandoned the event while being one of the 130 crews (out of 270 at the start) to escape the storm on the Lachamp - Raphaël plateau. This was only a temporary setback as Walter Röhrl became a legend in the early 1980s by winning the Monte Carlo World Championship four
