In 1978, Jacques Panciatici won the FFSA Renault Challenge at the wheel of a Renault 5 Alpine Gr.2, which gave him the opportunity to join Volkswagen France as an official driver from 1979 to 1981. During his final season at the wheel of the Gr.2 Volkswagen Golf Gti, the driver from Marseille performed brilliantly in the Tour de France Automobile. He won the class and finished sixth overall. A result which enabled the little Golf in the BP Racing colours to enter the history books of French rallying.
