Per Eklund est l’un des plus grands pilotes de rallye suédois. Il roule en WRC entre 1973 et 1997 ! Le début de sa carrière professionnelle se déroule avec la marque suédoise Saab. En Rallycross, il effectue toute sa carrière avec le constructeur national mais en rallye, après 12 saisons de bons et loyaux services, il part découvrir d’autres équipes. On le retrouve ainsi chez Fiat, Triumph, et même Subaru à la fin de sa carrière. Mais en 1980, il fait sensation au Rallye Monte-Carlo au volant d’une Volkswagen Golf GTi aux couleurs du drapeau suédois ! Il y décroche une magnifique 5e place au classement général juste derrière l’Ascona d’un autre Suédois. Un résultat inespéré pour la petite Golf Gr.2 !
