L’Histoire de la famille Peugeot est un beau symbole de l’industrialisation en France. En 1810, Jean-Pierre et Jean-Frédéric Peugeot transforment le moulin familial en aciérie. Visionnaire, Armand Peugeot souhaite diversifier l’entreprise familiale et développer les “vélocipèdes”. Quelques années plus tard, il est à l’origine de la commercialisation de la Type 3, la première automobile Peugeot produite en série. Ensuite, il fonde La Société Anonyme des Automobiles Peugeot pour développer des automobiles. De leur côté, les enfants des frères Peugeot conservent leur entreprise pour produire cycles et outils.

Deux usines sont alors créées, à Audincourt (Doubs) puis à Lille (Nord), pour lancer l’aventure des automobiles Peugeot. Nous sommes alors à la veille du XXe Siècle. Avant la Première Guerre, la société fabrique environ 10.000 voitures par an. Après la “Der des ders”, ce chiffre est doublé en quelques années. D’ailleurs, en 1929, l’usine de Sochaux créée 17 ans plus tôt, est agrandie pour centraliser toutes les productions de la marque. Elle devient le plus grand centre industriel de France. C’est aussi en 1929 que le constructeur au lion introduit ses dénominations à trois chiffres avec zéro central. La Peugeot 201 est la première voiture à arborer cette nomenclature. Le premier chiffre désigne la taille du véhicule (de 1 à 8) et le troisième précise la génération. Au milieu, le 0 est un symbole d’alliance entre les deux. C’est également dans ce 0 que se trouvait la manivelle pour démarrer le moteur de la 201 notamment.  

Lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Peugeot, comme de nombreuses industries en France, consacre la majeure partie de sa production à destination de l’occupant allemand. Cependant, une voiturette électrique, la VLV, est tout de même commercialisée entre 1941 et 1945. L’après-guerre marque le renouveau du Lion, avec notamment la 203, une voiture populaire et pratique.  C’est le début d’une Success Story à la Française. 

En 1965, la Holding PSA est créée afin de regrouper les différentes activités du groupe (voitures, cycles, sports mécaniques...). Onze ans plus tard, Peugeot et Citroën fusionnent pour donner naissance à PSA Peugeot Citroën.  A cette époque, Peugeot est n°2 derrière Renault avec en moyenne 500.000 voitures produites par an. Les modèles phares se succèdent jusqu’au début du XXIe Siècle : 203, 205, 206, les petites citadines séduisent des millions d’automobilistes. Avec 8 393 216 d’exemplaires produits, la 206 devance sa grande sœur la 205 (5 278 055 d’unités), suivies ensuite par la 405 et la 307.En 2017, Peugeot rachète Opel avant de fusionner quelques années plus tard avec le géant américano-italien, FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles). Ce rapprochement donne naissance au groupe Stellantis, 5e groupe automobile au monde. 

Since 1910, Peugeot vehicles have proudly worn the Lion emblem. The feline has become the symbol of the brand, a nod to the coat of arms of Franche-Comté, the region where the brand originated. 

Peugeot: the lionesses roar in motorsport. .  

Peugeot is one of the car manufacturers with a deep and enduring connection to motorsport. In 1895, a Peugeot— the Type 7—won the first timed race in history. Between 1913 and 1916, the L76 dominated French circuits as well as the legendary Indianapolis 500. Before the creation of the World Rally Championship, the Peugeot 404 ruled Africa’s flagship event, the East African Safari Rally.   

The 1980s were defined by the mythical 205. The little lioness first triumphed in rallying, winning world titles in 1985 and 1986. The queen of Group B was then unleashed on the unforgiving terrain of the Dakar Rally after the category’s ban at the end of the 1986 season. In the 1987 Dakar, the 205 won on its very first appearance, driven by Finnish driver Ari Vatanen—who was himself discovering the event. The 205 repeated the feat the following year with another Finn, Juha Kankkunen. 

After the 205, the 405 carried Peugeot’s colors to victory in motorsport—first once again at Dakar, then at the famous Pikes Peak hill climb. Each time, Ari Vatanen was behind the wheel.  

The 1990s were marked by victories at the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans with the 905. Peugeot then returned to rally stages with the 206. Once again, success came courtesy of a Finn, the towering Marcus Grönholm. The 206 secured three consecutive manufacturers’ titles between 2000 and 2002. 

In 2013, Peugeot returned to Pikes Peak with a driver borrowed from Citroën’s ranks: Sébastien Loeb. Two years later, the lionesses were back on the Dakar trails with the 2008 and then the 3008 DKR. In four appearances, Peugeot claimed three victories: two with “Mr. Dakar” Stéphane Peterhansel, and one with “El Matador” Carlos Sainz. Peugeot also shone in the newly created World Rallycross Championship, winning the manufacturers’ title in 2015, followed by numerous victories between 2014 and 2020.  

Since 2019, Peugeot has returned to endurance racing and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, continuing to carry forward this rich sporting heritage.

From the legendary 205 to the E-Legend Concept, including the 206, 406, 607, and even the brand’s original pickup trucks, Peugeot models abound. In total, 120 Peugeot models have been reproduced in resin by OttOmobile since 2009. Whether in 1:18 or 1:12 scale, the lionesses are far from done roaring at OttO!
